Immerse yourself in
Algonquin culture Bordering Maniwaki to the south is the First Nations community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, that celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2003. You’ll find its main tourist attraction, Mawandoseg Kitigan Zibi, at less than 10 minutes from Maniwaki. When you visit Mawandoseg, you’ll take a walking tour of a traditional Algonquin village. This interpretation centre is set outdoors in the forest, in a natural setting. Once on the self-guided trail, you’ll meet Algonquin interpreters working at a wide variety of traditional methods illustrating their ancestral way of life. The visit will last on average 90 minutes. At the end of the tour you’ll have a chance to taste fresh bannock (aboriginal bread) that you dip in maple syrup. Then, after your visit, take the time to discover the Kitigan Zibi Cultural and Education Centre. Located next to Mawandoseg, it houses contemporary and traditional exhibits, such as drums, medicinal plants and birchbark baskets. You will also find an interactive exhibit and a vast selection of historical photographs. The community also has a few boutiques catering to tourists. Annual Pow-WowThe first weekend in June is Kitigan Zibi’s traditional Pow-Wow. This yearly celebration is rich in colours, culture and attracts visitors from around the globe. In 2003, the Pow-Wow will be held on May 31 and June 1. For information: 819-449-5449. Visit also:
